AS COUNTY COMMISSIONER, EMILY BONILLA HAS A RECORD OF FIGHTING FOR OUR COMMUNITY & CREATING RESULTS

Emily requested children services funding and worked with the Board of County Commissioners resulting in a unanimous vote for an additional $20 million annually.

Emily collaborated with other county commissioners nationwide to get federal funding for local governments resulting in $243 million for Orange County COVID-19 Relief for citizens, which resulted in funding for small businesses, Rental and Bill Payment Assistance for individuals, and food pantries.

Emily advocated for the purchase of pristine land for preservation along the Little Econlockhatchee River. Her purpose is to protect our environment to which many of us care about.

Emily fought for proper use of our tax dollars by standing up against funding a $700 million expansion for the Convention Center when the county lost 97% of our Tourism Development Tax revenue caused by the pandemic.

Orange County Faces Proposed Sales Tax Increase in November

County Commissioner Emily Bonilla, who represents some of the eastern parts of the county, threw out a series of conditions for her support of the tax increase, including no new toll roads and no corporate welfare.

“All mass transit should be free to use. Sunrail doesn’t do a great job of checking people for their tickets, and Lynx is not easily accessible due to the limited ways they accept payments…. If the taxpayers are paying for it anyway, they should ride for free,” Bonilla told her ...

Orange County drastically drops dangerous dog fees

Since 2005, the dangerous dog fee was $742, initially, and $515 for a yearly inspection.

“Seemed more of a penalty than something that was covering costs that we’re providing services for,” said Emily Bonilla, Orange County Commissioner, District 5.

But after Gaviria brought the issue to Commissioner Bonilla, who took the concern to the board, a unanimous vote dropped the fees drastically.

“It seems they were charging that fee based on what everybody else was charging, rather than look at the actual cost,” Bonilla said.

Orange County commissioners vote to continue toll-road plans for Split Oak Forest

According to Bonilla, the Florida Communities Trust – the state agency tasked with reviewing the plan – said the proposal might technically be considered a “land exchange” application to build a road.

Bonilla said she had conversations and exchanged emails with officials in Tallahassee, and concluded it was filed incorrectly as a “linear facility” application for the road.

In the end, the board voted five-to-two to uphold the approval, with commissioners Maribel Gomez Cordero and Emily Bonilla voting in opposition, the same commissioners who voted against the ...

Local officials discuss the need for more affordable student housing

Bonilla shared her story as well as her own views on the issue. She said the situation has worsened for students through the years, as tuition costs have risen sharply and graduate students are often burdened with paying back student debt.

“The increase in tuition has gone up so much and so fast,” Bonilla said. “And when you are out of college most of your income goes to paying off that student loan, which increases your chances of needing affordable housing even more after you graduate. ...

Report: Blacks, Latinos at Risk of Undercount in 2020 Census

Emily Bonilla is worried her district in metro Orlando will be undercounted during next spring’s once-in-a-decade head count of everybody in the United States because of who lives there: new arrivals, immigrants, the poor, renters and rural residents who sometimes regard government with suspicion.

“We’re growing so fast that I know we have more people in the area than the data is stating. This area already is undercounted,” said Bonilla, a county commissioner in one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the U.S.

Commissioners approve $6 million in tourist tax dollars for new Winter Park library

Commissioners Siplin and Emily Bonilla voted against giving hotel tax dollars to the project because, as many Winter Park residents expressed, they didn’t feel like it was a venue that would promote tourism.

Orange County Commissioner Emily Bonilla questioned the return on investment for a project such as the Winter Park Canopy, which appeared to be relying heavily on weddings as a source of revenue, she said. To help pay for the Harrod property, Commissioner Emily Bonilla, who won her seat in 2016 with support from residents opposed to high-density developments in rural areas, proposed using $2.5 million set aside for a future park in “The Grow.”

In a memo to fellow commissioners in December, Bonilla described Harrod’s property as “virtually untouched by modern standards, which leaves it in pristine condition for a potential historical site or park.”

Expressway proposal for Bithlo and east Orange gets 8-mile extension to the Beachline

Orange County’s commissioner for the area, Emily Bonilla, thinks the call for an expressway through Bithlo would spur further suburban sprawl.

Of the two agencies’ proposals, Bonilla said it comes down to comparing evils.

The worst and most long-lasting damage, she said, would be from the state’s plan to build an expressway along Colonial Drive because it would significantly wall off the north half of Bithlo from the south side.

Her preference would be to redesign S.R. 50 with measures to ...

“This issue has received a lot of news attention and provides a great opportunity for us to get the story right about bats,” Bonilla says. “Bats are incredible creatures which are misunderstood. There are myths that ‘all bats carry rabies.’ This is false. Studies have shown that less than 1 percent of bats have been found to carry rabies. A person has a better chance of winning the state lottery jackpot than catching rabies from a bat …”

Hurricane Maria Could Change the Politics of Puerto Rico, Florida, and America Forever
